Spruce Mountain Boys Crowned 2026 MVC Basketball Champions
Phoenix win back-to-back championships
February 7: The Spruce Mountain Phoenix defeated the Hall-Dale Bulldogs 62-49 to capture their second straight Mountain Valley Conference Basketball Championship at Lewiston High School. The Phoenix came into the game with a 16-2 record, with one of their two losses coming at the hands of Hall-Dale (14-4). 
Spruce Mountain jumped out to a 10-14 lead in the first period with Owen Kelvey leading the way with 7 points. Karter Eldridge and Tayshaun Cleveland each scored 4 for Hall-Dale. In the second period, In the second period, 6'3" senior Cai Dougher scored 5 of the Phoenix 13 points. Cleveland again scored 4 points in the period, but Spruce Mountain went in the halftime with a 27-16 lead.
Spruce came out strong in the 3rd period, outscoring the Bulldogs 19-11 to open up a 46-27 lead. Dylan Jewett scored 7 points in the period to lead the Phoenix and Eldrich scored 6 for Hall-Dale. Hall-Dale made a run in the 4th, outscoring Spruce Mountain 22-16 with Cleveland and Greyson Cary each scoring 8 points. Scoring 7 points for the Phoenix was Dougher and Spruce Mountain celebrated for the second year in a row.
Leading the Phoenix in scoring were Dougher and Kelvey with 17 each with Jewett adding 13. Cleveland finished with 17 points for Hall-Dale with support coming from Eldrich with 14 and Cary with 11.
Spruce Mountain goes into the playoffs as the #1 seed in Southern Maine Class C and will play the winner of the Oak Hill/Wells preliminary game. Hall-Dale, #2 and will play the winner of the Dirigo/Winslow matchup.


Maranacook Men and Women Win 2026 MVC Alpine Championship
February 11: Lily Boulanger, fresh off a victory in the MVC giant slalom, took home double honors, winning the Mountain Valley Conference slalom championship as a steady snow was falling. The Mountain Valley senior had runs of 47.44 and 47.82 and a 1:35.26 combined time to take the gold.
Maranacook's Phoebe Bell, who's first run of 47.37 was the fastest of the day, had a second run of 48.57 and a combined time of 1:35.94 which was good for second place. In third place was Emerson Dunlap of Maranacook with times of 50.26 and 50.46 for a two-run time of 1:40.72.
Fourh place went to Ashley Nelson of Spruce Mountain scored times of 49.84 and 51.59 and a combined time of 1:41.43. In fifth place was Lily Carlton of Monmouth. She had time of 54.99 and 56.22 (1:51.21). Sixth place went to Mountain Valley's Addison Libby who had times of 59.38 and 55.24 (1:54.6).
With their great showing, the Maranacook women won the 2026 MVC Alpine Championship.

In the men's race, Jackson Archer of Spruce Mountain won the individual MVC Slalom Championship with time of 50.50 and 51.20 for a two-run time of 1:41.70. In second place was Maranacook's Wyatt Duca with times of 55.02 and 52.85, giving him a two-run time of 1:47.87. Grabbing the final podium position was Maranacook's Fletcher Morrill who had times of 55.85 and 57.72 and a combined time of 1:53.57.
In fourth place was Khalil Hamdi of Mountain Valley with times of 57.00 and 57.05 and a combined time of 1:54.05. Fifth place was won by Dirigo's Ethan Knowles with times of 58.97 and 1:03.95 and a two-run time of 2:02.92. In sixth place was Max Giberson of Dirigo with times of 1:01.59 and 1:02.81 (2:04.40).
The Maranacook men won the 2026 Men's Team MVC Alpine Championship.

Boulanger and Riley Win MVC Giant Slalom
February 11: Lily Boulanger captured the 2026 Mountain Valley Conference Giant Slalom Championship at Black Mountain of Maine. Boulanger, a senior, had runs of 59.02 and 57.83 for a two-run total of 1:56.85.
Maranacook senior Phoebe Bell came in second with times of 1:00.22 and 59.99 for a combined time of 1:00.21. The final podium spot was taken by Emerson Dunlap of Maranacook, who had runs of 1:00.95 and 1:00.80 and a two-run time of 2:01.75.
Fourth place went to Maranacook's Evelyn Stevenson with times of 1:02.34 and 1:02.66 (2:05.00 ). Ashley Nelson of Spruce Mountain came in fifth with times of 1:02.91 and 1:03.86 (2:06.77). Monmouth's Lily Carlton had times of 1:02.55 and 1:04.59 (2:07.14) to take sixth place.
In the men's race, Maranacook's Tristan Riley took top honors with runs of 56.98 and 55.45 and a two-run total of 1:52.43. Wyatt Grant of Winthrop took second place with times of 1:01.24 and 1:00.84 and a two-run total of 2:02.08. Third place went to Dylan Lemay of Rangeley. Lemay had runs of 1:01.42 and 1:03.71 and a combined time of 2:05.13.
Taking fourth place was Dirigo's Max Giberson with times of 1:03.62 and 1:02.63 and a two-run time of 2:06.25. Sam Hayes of Maranacook came in fifth place with times of 1:03.01 and 1:03.36 (2:06.37). Coming in sixth place was Wyatt Duca of Maranacook with times of 1:03.28 and 1:04.74 (2:08.02 ).

Maranacook Women and Orono Men Win 2026 Nordic Championships
The Maranacook women captured the 2026 Mountain Valley Conference Nordic Championship at Titcomb Mountain on February 7th. The skiers competed in the 5k Classical Pursuit. The start order was based on their order of finish in the 5k Freestyle race that was held at Black Mountain on February 4th. Day 1 winner, Clara White, did not compete Saturday, so Harper Olmstead was the first skier out. Harper did not give up the lead and finished the Classical in 21:41.4 for a two-day total of 38:42 to capture the individual championship. Orono's Ellie Arsenault finished in 24:39,7 for a two day total of 42:59, which was good enough for second place. Also qualifying for the podium was Maranacook's Anwen Kane, who finished Saturday's race in 23:56.3 and a combined time of 44:13.0.

Rounding out the top 6 were Wintrhop's Anna August (25:50.0 and 49.21.0), Maranacook's Kira Pelletier (26:41.1 and 51:49.0) and Maranacook's Ella Giles (29:14.8 and 52:17.0).
The Orono men won the 2026 Nordic Championship, placing 2 skiers in the top six. Winning the pursuit race was freestyle chamion Sam Geissinger of Spruce Mountain. Geissinger had a time of 17:15.5, giving him a two-day total of 31:29. Finishing in second place was Winthrop's Sam St. Germain with a time of 18:14.2 and a two-day total of 32:41.2. Third place was won by Liam Waring of Orono with a time of 18:46.2 and a combined time of 34:08.
Other top six finishers were Reid Quirk of Orono with a time of 19:29.6 (34:26), Gianni Haefele of Winthrop, who finished in 19:35.8 (35:22.8) with Winthrop's Michael Van Tassel taking the sixth place with a time of 20:08.7 (35:55.7).

White and Geissinger are MVC Nordic Freestyle Champions
Orono senior Clara White continued her dominance in Maine Nordic skiing Wednesday as she won the 2026 Mountain Valley Conference women's 5k Freestyle race at Black Mountain of Maine.
White, fresh off her victory in the Sassi Memorial 5k Classical on Saturday, skated across the line in 14:52 to take the crown. Coming in second place was Maranacook's Harper Olmstead with a time of 17:01.5. Taking third place was White's teammate Ellie Arsenault with a time of 18:20.7.
In fourth place was Anwen Kane of Maranacook, who finished the race in 20:17.0. Fifth place went to Ella Giles of Maranacook with a time of 23:03.7. Rounding out the top six was Emily Saunders of Maranacook, who finished with a time of 23:08.2.
In the men's race, Spruce Mountain's Sam Geissinger came in first with a time of 14:14.7. In
second place was Sam St. Germain of Winthrop, who completed the course in 14:27.3. Taking the final podium position was Orono's Reid Quirk who skated across the finish line at the 14:57.7 mark.
Finishing in fourth place was Liam Waring of Orono with a time of 15:22.0, Fifth pace went to Michael Van Tassel with a time of 15:47.8. Rounding out the top six was Gianni Haeflel of Winthrop, who finished in 15:47.9,
The MVC Nordic Championships conclude on Saturday with the 5K Classical pursuit at Titcomb Mountain in Farmington.

2026 Cheering Championship Won by Lisbon
The 2026 Mountain Valley Conference Cheering Title was won by Lisbon High School for the 4th year in a row. Mountain Valley was the runner up and also received the Spirit Award.

Lisbon defeats Boothbay to Claim the 2025 MVC Field Hockey Title
Saunders goal in OT vaults Greyhounds

Senior forward Alivia Saunders scored a goal at 4:35 in the overtime session to give Lisbon a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Boothbay Regional and the 2025 Mountain Valley Conference Field Hockey Championship. The teams completed regulation time knotted at 1-1. After a scoreless first half, Boothbay's Natalie Flagg opened the scoring with a goal at 13:16 of the third period. Lisbon knotted the score on a goal by senior Aubriana Bright at 10:40 of the fourth period, forcing an extra session.
Sophia Cote recorded 7 saves for Lisbon while Jess Steinmatz had 7 saves for Boothbay.
Lisbon recently completed the regular season with a record of 11-1-2 and is ranked #2 in South Class C. Boothbay also finished the regular season at 11-2-1 and is ranked #1 in South Class C. In their only meeting of the regular season, the teams fought to a tie.
